A Room In Brooklyn - 1932, Edward Hopper
Another from my project for my class “Performing the Problematic”
A preview of the shoot from sunday.
I went to photograph a Ship Graveyard in Staten Island today. One of my friends, Stela had this idea for me to photograph it for a magazine she is starting. I finally got a new camera, and I used Portra (which I have never used before). Since I took the photos on film, they won’t be ready until tomorrow. It probably wasn’t smart to use two new variables, but I got really excited to use both. We took a subway (20 minutes) to a ferry (20 minutes) to a bus (1 hour) to get to the Witte Marine Scrapyard (amazing that $2.25 got us that far). Luckily I had my phone to see where we were otherwise we would have had no idea where to get off, since no one seemed to know (or want to admit) this place existed. We had to pass through a marsh in order to see the boats, but we were too far away to get a close up of them. Luckily, Stela was adamant about getting close to these ships. We walked about a mile south along the street in order to try and get a better view, but the shore was well fenced off (only later googling would explain why). I was very dejected, but Stela pushed on further. We saw a house that had a ‘No Trespassing’ sign, but it had a clear path to the shore. We agreed to knock on the door, out of fear that a toothless man would kill us and then bury our bodies in the marsh if we didn’t ask permission. It turned out the man was very nice and let us cut through his backyard. After walking about 500 feet through what seemed like the most fertile grass in the world, we finally reached the boats. Luckily, one was washed ashore so I was able to hop from one beam to another (yes, very stupid in hindsight but incredibly fun). There I probably took the most photos. On the way back to shore, while on the beam my sunglasses fell off and into the brown water, 10 feet below. While my life was flashing before me, Stela heroically fished out my glasses with some rusty metal pole she found (not the best idea Stela). Photos (hopefully) tomorrow…
